Price comparison sites are reporting an increase in interest from 4×4 drivers as they are more likely to use these vehicles during the snowy and icy weather. That’s all very well but the problems occur when they use them with too much confidence. Even a 4×4 can slip on the ice – and the results lead to insurance claims.
Regardless of the size and power of a vehicle, the braking distances are the same. However, it’s easy to forget this and drive too fast and without due care and attention when sitting high up in a powerful four-wheel drive, claim car insurance experts.
One website reports over a million searches from drivers of 4x4s over the past fortnight, while between 5 and 10 January, the number of searches increased overall by 50 per cent for such vehicles.
A spokesperson for a car insurance price comparison site explained, “when we do suffer from such severe snow and ice causing treacherous driving conditions the advice is generally to stay off the roads entirely. Having a more able vehicle for driving in the snow is not a guarantee that your journey would be any safer or less eventful when faced with such unpredictable driving conditions.”
